Between 1910 & 2010 the Tourmalet has become a legend and its hero was the Frenchman Octave Lapize, the first rider over the summit uttering those immortal words to officials as he walked towards the top of the Col d'Aubisque on the 326 klm stage from Luchon to Bayonne "You're murderers!"
Lapize won the Tour that year but was also a fine all-rounder winning the French Championship 3 times, Paris-Roubaix, Paris-Tours, Paris-Brussels, Brussels 6-day, cyclo cross events & motor-paced races in a short career tragically ended in 1917 when he was shot down  in a dog-fight with a Gernam bi-place over northern France and died from his injuries.
